How do you change colors in crochet?

I love to crochet but I have not been able to figure out how to switch the colors. All of my projects have been one color. I have tried and each time I do, I end up with the first color a little bit on the next row! Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

You stop on the last step of the previous stitch and start the new color. For example, if you are doing a double crochet stitch, you pull yarn thru 3 times to complete the stitch, right? To change colors, stop after the 2nd time and instead pull thru the new color.

This lady has awesome videos on crocheting, here are the results for color change.
