@tjw1963 I think what happens is that you start with ch 4, YO, put the hook through the first chain. Then there’s a skip in the video, then “I pull the loop through once and then complete my DC.” I think what’s missing because of the break is [pull the yarn through, YO] .In other words, it looks like you made the 1st DC from the first chain, rather than extending the foundation by one loop and then making the double crochet from that loop. (Sorry if I’m wrong!)

@cascadejacques What do you mean stutter?
-
Teresa, this video stutters a bit in the beginning and it makes it unclear how to proceed after the initial stitching. You do awesome work here and it would be great if you could re-do this one!

THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! Your are so clear in your videos. I’ve been wanting to know how to do this for awhile to try and make a pair of mittens easier to get into…here we go! Couldn’t do it w/o your teaching! Thanks again 🙂

Yes, you can use the foundation to replace the traditional chain. You would first want to make sure that a row of double crochet will look alright with the pattern stitch you are using.

I am new to crocheting. I love your videos! Thank you so much. I am working on a pattern that required a chain of 460 then skip the first 5 chains and do 2 dc in each of the next 2 ch then skip 2 chains then repeat til the turn. Are these chainless foundations usable for this kind of pattern?

This is BRILLIANT! There are no words to describe my excitement! I love to crochet, but always dreaded the first row after the chain. :S I can’t wait to try this! Thanks!

With the Internet, a lot of techniques have filtered across the borders and ponds. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it.

Great idea! Just proves that one can crochet for decades and still keep on learning new stuff. I’ve been knitting and spinning for the past (mumble) years, but for some reason felt the urge to make afghans a few weeks ago – then I started reading crochet threads on Rav and stumbled across this video. Thanks so much for posting it.

Last night i was so excited that i made several small square coasters just to use this stitch. it was fun thanks again.

You are welcome. I prefer this technique instead of the chain. It blends right in with the rest of the stitches. You don’t have to worry about a chain that is to tight and pulling.

thank you for sharing, i didn’t know that there were even chainless foundations out there. i teach crochet to some friends and can’t wait to show them this. thanks alot.

You are welcome. I love this stitch and prefer to use it instead of the chain whenever I can.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been trying to conquer this stitch for over a year and I just wasn’t getting it. Today I watched your video and for the first time it clicked that I need to think vertically instead of horizontally. What a difference this will make in my sweaters and scarves. Happy Holidays! 🙂
